With doubtful animal shows and missing care, many animal parks in Germany are animal rights according to animal welfare groups. They have analyzed 25 animal parks in Germany and that they get closed, if they don't do something against the abuse. In a European comparison, German animal parks are especially bad.
The study in Germany was performed by the German club "Verein Animal Public", the overall control had the British Born Free Foundation. According to the organizations , the examiners have analyzed whether the animal parks would abide by the European guidelines regarding husbandry of wild animals.

It was expected that Germany would be one of the lands that abides best according to the guidelines, but they found out that Germany is in fact one of the worst. That's why animal rights activists have written an own report for Germany.
Last year they had already published an overview about animal parks in 20 different European countries. The Data for Germany was from 2010. It took time to analyze the data.
In a park in Baden-Wuerttemberg, chimpanzees had to dress like humans and drive a tricycle, ride ponies and eat with a fork from a plate. An animal park in Lower Saxony allows visitors to pet cheetahs in return for money.
The animal welfare groups criticize that the wild animals of some parks were being misused for entertainment. Presentations which include "circus tricks" are not part of the educational mandate.
