The state energy company China Guodian Corporation plant is planning on building an hydroelectric power plant at the upper reaches of the Areng river in Cambodia.
For the inhabitants the Cheăy Areng-dam would be a catastrophe. Their habitat would drown in the resulting reservoir.
For instance only a few hundred of the critically endangered siam-crocodile are alive throughout the world - most of them live in the Areng valley. The humans living there would lose their homes and would have to resettle.
Some Data:
- 20.000 hectar of rainforest is in danger of being floded. 50% of it in the protected Kardamom forest.
- It's a region with high biodiversity: 277 animal species have been counted there. 31 of them are endangered.
- ilegal logging would increase in this region with its opening.
- 1000 indigenous Khmer Daeum would need to be resettled.
